Huon Writes

In 2025, my story “Music Night” was published in Huon Writes No. 2, an anthology from the Tasmanian South.

“Music Night” explores the theme of the Huon Valley as a place of healing, through community and connection. It is one of ten stories (fiction and non-fiction) by Huon Valley writers, each giving a different perspective on what it means to live this part of the world.

Huon Writes No. 2 has been jointly produced by Ashwood Publishing and MKoach Design, bringing established and emerging writers together to encourage and celebrate the wealth of writing talent in the Huon. It follows on from the highly successful Huon Writes No. 1, published in 2024.

Music Night

A few years ago, I took up piano lessons with a local teacher, after not having played the piano for many years. Initially, this was a joyful experience. Playing the piano again was like reconnecting with a long-lost friend. However, when I agreed to play a solo at a community concert, I found myself grappling with intense stage-fright and having to confront all the things that made me give up on the piano in my teens. My story “Music Night” is about how the things we love as children never really leave us, though negative experiences can sometimes drive them underground for a while. Through community and connection these things can be restored to us. Fears can be confronted in unexpected ways, and scores can be settled with the past.
